International Workshop on Food Loss and Food Waste

7 - 9 November 2016
Washington, D.C., United States

The World Bank Group (its agencies International Bank for Reconstruction and Development IBRD and  International Development Association IDA), in partnership with the Korea Green Growth Trust Fund (KGGTF) and the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) of North America (Canada, USA, Mexico) organized an International Workshop on Food Loss and Food Waste in Washington D.C.

This workshop brought together experts from government, civil society, the private sector, cutting-edge food bank operators, and non-governmental organizations discussing the key challenges and opportunities to address food waste. In particular, this event provided an opportunity to share experiences and best practices related to current and emerging issues on food waste with the objective of identifying priorities and actions to move the food waste reduction and recovery agenda forward in the Americas and beyond. The workshop addressed the following topics:

  • Day 1: The Global Challenges and Dimensions of Food Waste;
  • Day 2: Approaches to Address Food Waste;
  • Day 3: Public and Private Sector Polices/Strategies on Food Waste.

The Save Food Initiative used this opportunity to interact with the World Bank, which only recently showed active interest in the global FLW issue. It is anticipated that the global FLW reduction community can benefit from a strong and resourceful partner as the WB.
