A presentation was made by FAO on the “Inclusive approach to post-harvest system management” at the Second World Small-scale fisheries congress (21-26 September 2014) attended by more than 400 participants. Taking stock of the case studies conducted in Lake Victoria (2008) and Volta Basin riparian countries (2013)  in fish loss assessment and reduction, the presentation provided information on the magnitude of fish losses (15- 60%) with quality losses being the most predominant and the critical loss points in the supply chain. It raised the needful integration of policy  and social dimensions, especially wearing gender lenses in the process of assessing and reducing losses, so far in most instances technology and infrastructure-based. The movie night organized within the same forum was an opportunity to share a video of a best practice loss reduction case in small-scale fisheries community in Africa. The Burundi success story featured how fish losses have been halved and value chain actors’ income significantly increased while safety and quality of end-products have been secured.
