Translating food loss and waste reduction into climate action: SAVE FOOD at the first post-Paris Alliances and Coalitions Forum

04 Jul 2016

The first Alliances and Coalitions Global Forum took place in Rabat, Morocco, from 23 -24 June and convened global stakeholders to discuss how Parties and non-Party stakeholders through cooperative initiatives can accelerate climate action on the ground.

With the new road map in place for the Global Climate Action Agenda, the cooperative initiatives (including SAVE FOOD) of the Lima-Paris Action Agenda are expected to play an important role as catalysts to mobilize more ambitious climate action, which is critical if the goals and objectives of the Paris Agreement are to be achieved. This includes both addressing the gap between combined pledges of the submitted Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the global 1.5 0C/2 0C target as well as strengthening the NDC implementation. Building on the achievements of the Lima-Paris Action Agenda, the Global Climate Action Agenda sets out to boost cooperative action between governments, cities, businesses, investors and citizens to cut emissions rapidly and help vulnerable nations adapt to climate impacts. As such, the key themes of the Forum centered around how the cooperative initiatives can contribute to the implementation of national action plans and deliver on the SDGs and ways to measure this in a credible manner.

As one of the cooperative initiatives, SAVE FOOD is welcoming the road map set by France and Morocco's global climate champions and is joining efforts to support its implementation. The work ahead under the new Agenda presents a key opportunity to link food loss and waste reduction with climate action due to its cross-cutting synergies to climate change mitigation and adaptation, food security and nutrition.  At country-level, SAVE FOOD will support the alignment of food loss and waste reduction activities with national climate change priorities and objectives. Also, in terms of transparency and tracking of progress, SAVE FOOD is providing technical assistance on measuring food loss and waste and ways forward to achieve SDG 12.3.
