  SAVE FOOD consultant wins Feed the World competition
SAVE FOOD consultant, Camelia Bucatariu, successfully submitted two proposals for the Young Professionals Platform for Agricultural Research for Development (YPARD) competition. The Save.Use.Produce (SaveUP) proposal on nutrient cycles was submitted with Afton Halloran of FAO, and the Save Food, Save Future proposal on sustainable consumption was submitted with Sandra Ferrari (FAO), and Daniela Demel (WFP).

Uk retailer to track down and reduce waste
The retailing chain Tesco has set itself the goal of reducing food waste throughout the value chain. The company says 32 percent of food is wasted across its value chain, with 16 percent supply chain, 1 percent in retail, and 16 percent in homes. Danish retailer Coop has entered a similar agreement with Stop Wasting Food.

9 200 meals recovered in Jaipur
The Annakshetra Foundation has recovered 9 200 meals from weddings that that took place on the Hindu holy day of Akshay Tritiya, on May 14th. The food was re-distributed to underprivileged communities in support of World Environment Day, and the Think.Eat.Save. campaign.

Our biggest problem? We’re wasting food
Canadian retail-industry Magazine Canadian Grocer notes that Canada tosses 40 per cent of the food they produce each year. Looking at a number of case studies, they find it's bad for business and bad for the planet.

Families around the world with their weekly food
Uk Newspaper Daily Mail re-published a story on dining habits around the world through photographing families in their living spaces with their weekly shopping. Fascinating views of variety and quantity.

Graffiti artist creates wasted food art
Florida weekly Latin Times published a story on an artist in Brazil who created an impressive mural made only of thrown out food. He wants to highlight the often neglected awareness of food waste in developing countries. See video here.

Composting is not addressing the problem
US-based Post-Carbon Institute writes on the energy that is spent producing wasted food. Food waste has a far higher energy invested in its entire “life cycle” than is returned thorough composting. Composting is therefore not an alternative for food waste reduction, but a processing alternative for a later stage.

UNEP celebrates traditional preservation
The UN Environmental Agency highlights traditional preservation methods during World Environment Day. This year’s theme supports UNEP’s and FAO's joint food waste prevention and reduction campaign Think.Eat.Save and encourages individuals to reduce their “food-print”.

Tackling poverty with social enterprise
UK Newspaper Guardian’s Social Enterprise Network takes a look at how organisations focusing on sub-Saharan Africa are working at every level of the supply chain to address food poverty and achieve food and nutrition security.

Food preservation and world hunger
Charles L. Wilson writes an article for Mother Earth News on how post-harvest food preservation systems may help combat world hunger. Solar refrigeration, intelligent packaging and establishing world food preservation centre are some approaches discussed.

The paradox of India
New York Times investigated the paradox of India having a quarter of its population malnourished while food production has doubled in the last 20 years. An open-air storage facility for rice is one example reason food does not reach the needy, and instead rots away.

Coordination reduces food waste
The Canadian-based Value Chain Management Centre has found that 25 percent of Ontario's peaches were wasted due to lack of coordination up and down the value chain. They found waste could be reduced at both farm and retail level by implementing relatively simple steps to cater for customer preferences.
 
Food losses and different packaging
The German research foundation Stiftung Mehrweg has released a study on the link between different types of packaging and damage and loss of freshness in fruit and vegetables. It found disposable packaging more prone to damage, and having larger proportion of damaged content.
 
Industry Food Waste Audit Survey
The UK-based CIC This is Rubbish has released their food-industry survey “Counting What Matters” on the willingness by businesses to use food waste audits to reduce waste in the food supply chain. Findings are positive, but companies are worried about costs, responsibility and government regulation.
 
The quiet revolution in staple food value chains
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has released a report on how staple value chains in Asia have transformed almost unnoticed. The Quiet Revolution in Staple Food Value Chains documents and explains the transformation and discuss implications for policymakers.
 
Global Food Security
The US based think-tank the Chicago Council on Global Affairs released its report on Global Food Security: The Power of Science, Trade, and Business. The report calls for halving post harvest losses by 2023, and support interconnections within value chains so as to make them more effective.
 
Avoiding future famines
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a synthesis report titled “Strengthening the Ecological Foundation of Food Security through Sustainable Food Systems”. The report highlights the importance of reducing food losses and waste in each step of the food value chain.

4 June 2013, Washington, US

Launch of U.S. Food Waste Challenge: The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), in collaboration with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will launch U.S. Food Waste Challenge, inviting producer groups, processors, manufacturers, retailers, communities, and others to: Reduce food loss and waste, Recover food for human consumption and Recycle discards to other uses.

  Grain Processing Tools Increase Harvest
The US-based engineering NGO Compatible Technology International (CTI) has developed a set of tools that significantly increase the amount of pearl millet grain farmers in developing countries can produce, reducing losses and improving the nutrition and income of rural households.

FAO and Civil Society Partnerships
FAO has released a short film where representatives from civil society and FAO share their views on how the collaboration between FAO, NGOs, social movements and member-based organizations can help in the fight against hunger and poverty. French and Spanish here.

 
Events  
  Zero Hunger Challenge launched in Asia and the Pacific
The United Nations event called on increased efforts by all to help ending hunger. “Eradicating hunger within our lifetime is still achievable if we work harder”, said FAO’s representative, Mr. Hiroyuki Konuma. Reducing food losses and waste is the fifth pillar of the Zero Hunger challenge.

One-day symposium on SAVE FOOD in India
The Indian newspaper Hindu featured an article on how the Chennai-based based Forum for Community Building and Leadership is organizing a symposium on SAVE FOOD on occasion World Environmental Day, covering Think.Eat.Save and Reduce Your ‘Food’ Print.

African growth slowed by post-harvest losses (PHL)
The Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme Partnership (CAADP) meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia held a side-event on food losses in Africa. It said PHL is frustrating high growth rates, food security, reduction of poverty and creation of wealth in Africa. SAVE FOOD participated at the event.

Agriculture value chains and the private sector
The International Food Policy Research Institute IFPRI hosted a webinar on how the private sector can help making food more affordable and accessible, reducing waste, bringing innovation to small farmers and easing bottlenecks to regional markets.


Partnerships


GiZ partners with SAVE FOOD
The Sustainable Agriculture project of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GiZ) has partnered with SAVE FOOD. The project is looking at use of resources in agriculture to improve long term productivity and sustainability, including conceiving post-harvest loss reduction projects.

Slow Food partners with SAVE FOOD
The global Slow Food movement has partnered with SAVE FOOD. Slow Food was founded raise awareness of local food traditions and counter people’s reduced interest in food, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world’s food supply.

World Wildlife Fund for Nature Italy partners with SAVE FOOD
WWF is working to bring a balance between our demands on the world, and the variety of life that lives in it. WWF Italy is currently studying the environmental impact of food waste in Italy in terms of carbon, water, nitrogen, pesticide and land use, to find “how much nature do we waste?”.
