Americans throw out more food than plastic, paper, metal and glass

In 2012, people living in the United States of America threw out roughly 35 million tonnes of food, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. This is almost 20 percent more food than they threw away in 2000, 50 percent more than in 1990, and nearly three times as much as in 1960, when the country discarded what now seems a paltry 12.2 million tonnes. Seattle city council (Washington, United States of America) has voted to fine businesses and residents who waste too much food. The city already recycles 56 percent of its waste and is aiming for 60 percent by 2015. Read more...
