FAO and the Retail Companies’ Association of Russia hold a roundtable on tackling food loss and waste in Russia

A roundtable centered on addressing the challenge of food loss and waste reduction in different subsectors of the Russian economy was held at the UN House in Moscow. The event, co-organized by the FAO Liaison Office in Moscow (FAOLOR) and the Retail Companies’ Association of Russia (ACORT), gathered representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor), the Consumers, Fish and Dairy Unions, Foodbank "RUS" Charitable Foundation, METRO Cash & Carry, and other private enterprises. SAVE FOOD will debut in China during swop 2017

A study from FAO and State Grain Administration reveals that 35 percent of China's annual grain production was wasted. In order to reduce China's food waste and loss, SAVE FOOD will debut in China during swop 2017 – China and Asia’s leading processing and packaging exhibition, addressing the target groups of food, beverages, confectionery, bakery, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, non-food consumer goods and industrial products in key emerging markets. The organizers will work more closely with the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture to become familiar with Chinese government policies. Food loss assessment studies conducted in developing countries

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is carrying out extensive studies on the topic of food losses in various districts of India. An essential task in the study is to identify potential critical loss points (CLPs), which is are defined as the points in the food supply chains (FSC) where food losses have high magnitude, great impact on food security, and a potent effect on the economic results of the FSC. The results of the India Study will be presented at the SAVE FOOD Congress on the first day of the 2017 interpack trade fair (4 – 10 May) in Düsseldorf. + READ MORE


Improved management of post-harvest losses in cereals and pulses

As part of the project "Mainstreaming food loss reduction initiatives for smallholders in food-deficit areas" funded by the Swiss agency for Development and Cooperation through a partnership between Rome-based UN agencies (FAO, IFAD, WFP) and following the study of post-harvest losses (PHL) along selected sorghum, maize and cowpea supply chains in Burkina Faso, a stakeholder consultation workshop will be organized in Burkina Faso. Participants will discuss policy and strategic orientations on post-harvest loss management in cereals and pulses, and validate a draft policy brief. + READ MORE


The First All Africa Post-harvest Congress and Exhibition

Last 17th January, the First All Africa Post-harvest Congress and Exhibition was officially launched. The event will be held on 28 - 31 March 2017, Nairobi, Kenya and theme is "Reducing Postharvest Food Losses: Sustainable Solutions for Africa". Diverse stakeholders in the food supply chain are among 500 participants expected in Nairobi. The congress seeks to contribute to the global agenda of reducing post-harvest food loss and waste. Panorama of Food and Nutrition Security in Latin America and the Caribbean 2016

According to FAO and the Pan American Health Organization, the use of land and other natural resources must be made more efficient and sustainable, the techniques of food production, storage and processing must be improved, and food losses and waste must be reduced to ensure equitable access to food for all. This report noted that food losses and waste generated in Latin America and the Caribbean occur mostly in the early stages of the food value chain, which is a threat to small farmers and consumers with lower purchasing power. + READ MORE


European Parliament votes to halve food waste by 2030
European Parliament

The European Parliament’s Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety voted in favour of regulations that require all member states to halve food waste by 2030. Food waste in the EU is estimated at some 89 million tonnes, or 180 kg per capita per year. MEPs advocate an EU food waste reduction target of 30 percent by 2025 and 50 percent by 2030, compared to 2014. + READ MORE


Grant funds conference on reducing food waste
Cornell University

The two-day workshop for business leaders to explore strategies to reduce food waste and loss through new products and services is tentatively scheduled for mid-2017 in New York City. According to Mark Milstein, clinical professor of management at Johnson, this workshop is meant to help catalyze innovation by businesses to deal with food loss and waste and to inspire new approaches to a critical problem. + READ MORE

Good food media award

The Thomson Reuters Foundation recently partnered with the Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition to launch the Food Sustainability Media Award. The award aims to recognise the work of professional journalists and emerging talent for excellence in communicating issues related to food security, sustainability, agriculture and nutrition, with a special focus on the big food paradoxes of our time such as food waste. The Food Waste Pyramid shows initiatives to reduce food waste and promote practical solutions that save resources by avoiding unwanted surpluses, diverting surplus food to charities or livestock feed and avoiding landfill. The Food Waste Pyramid also shows the simple steps that businesses can take to tackle food waste, in order of priority.
