A new energy project in Niger

This project, entitled "Formulation and validation of a national strategy and plan on new and renewable sources of energy in Niger", is an example of the type of project FAO can assist. Its main objectives are fighting poverty, promoting sustainable development, and formulating a national strategy on the potential contribution of new and renewable sources of energy (solar, wind, biomass and hydro). The project also includes the formulation of a national plan of action in order to mobilize local potential and to demonstrate a measurable impact upon rural poverty indicators. The strategy and the plan of action will place priority on the role of women in rural and economic activities and will be formulated in a participatory fashion, thereby involving all stakeholders, including governmental and non-governmental entities. A draft of the strategy and of the plan will be presented for finalization to a National Consultation to which all stakeholders will be invited. The Consultation is scheduled to take place in 2001, coinciding with the Year of New Information and Communication Technologies.
