November 2001 Summary report on FAO/RAP rural development support to disabled farmers in Campaign 2000"Breaking barriers to promote the social integration of disabled persons"3 December is designated as the International Day of Disabled Persons. To highlight the work that FAO has undertaken with disabled farmers, the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) contributes this "Summary report on FAO/RAP rural development support to disabled farmers in Campaign 2000". Campaign 2000, hosted by Thailand, followed a two-year long pilot project for training the rural disabled in mushroom farming at the facilities in Ubon Ratchatani, Thailand. The trainees learned the techniques of mushroom cultivation, processing and marketing through on-the-job training. Following their graduation, many trainees established mushroom houses in their own communities. These graduated trainees of the project participated actively in Campaign 2000, helping to promote greater public awareness about the need for agricultural training for the rural disabled in developing countries and the income-earning potential of these disabled individuals when provided with the appropriate support and training.
