The European System of Cooperative Research Networks in Agriculture - ESCORENA

The FAO Regional Office for Europe has been supporting research cooperation and information exchange in Europe through the European System of Cooperative Research Networks in Agriculture (ESCORENA) since 1974. The system's aims are to promote voluntary collaboration for information exchange and technology and knowledge transfer to accelerate the application of research results for better agricultural production and sustainable rural development.

At present 13 ESCORENA networks are active on well defined subjects. They cover research efforts related to Livestock (Sheep and Goat, Buffalo), Crops (Cotton, Flax, various Nut species, Olives, Pasture and Fodder Crops, Rice, Soybean, Sunflower), Food & Nutrition (Trace elements in food and diets), and Agri-environment (Recycling of Agricultural, Municipal and Industrial Residues in Agriculture - RAMIRAN, Sustainable Rural Environment and Energy Network - SREN).

In 2002, ESCORENA has transformed its web page to a truly interactive information tool. Member data, events, meetings, projects, publications and news can be entered by members through easy interfaces and are publically retrievable from an automatically maintained data base. The new site can be found at: http://escorena.fao.org
