Aid Agencies Workshop

Education for rural people: Targeting the poor

12-13 December 2002
FAO Headquarters
Rome, Italy

To boost Education for rural people as a crucial element of sustainable development, multilateral and bilateral aid agencies will meet in Rome, Italy, at FAO headquarters, on 12-13 December 2002. The workshop is organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) with the technical cooperation of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the financial support of the Italian Development cooperation.

Background

In a world where the richest 1% of the world's people receive as much income each year as the poorest 57%, most of the 2.8 billion people still live on less than $2 a day and 70% of this poor live in rural areas. Today inequalities reached alarming levels in world history and the gap among urban and rural people is not closing. It is mainly among the rural poor that the 800 million undernourished people live, as well as the 1.5 billion people that has no access to drinking water, the 2 billion people that does not have electricity and the 854 million adults illiterate (of which 544 are women), the 130 million children out of school and 13 million children lost their mother or both parents to AIDS. Among rural poor are most of the about 250 million children and adolescent obliged to work. They often work more than 12 hours a day, for example in cocoa, tobacco, banana plantations, exploited by local and multinational firms, and in many cases reduced to a condition of slavery. Among these children are those who will be increasing tomorrow the number of adult illiterates. Inequities feed delinquency and criminality which often constitute a sign of the exasperation of the poorest against world inequities. One of the major inequalities affecting the poor is the unequal chance of access to and completion of quality education for rural people, which is crucial to social and economic development.

To bridge the education gap between the rich and the poor, and between urban and rural areas of the developing countries, and to promote equal access to and completion of quality basic education, FAO is organizing this Aid Agencies Workshop on Education for rural people.
