Side Event: Gender and Agricultural Information Management
Second Consultation on Agricultural Information Management (COAIM)
FAO Headquarters, Rome

The Second Consultation on Agricultural Information Management (COAIM) was held at FAO Headquarters in Rome in September 2002. Various side events were held during the duration of the consultation. The "Side Event: Gender and Agricultural Information Management" noted that rural women and girls usually have less access than men to information and to new technologies. Without equal access to information, they are at a disadvantage in making informed choices about what to produce and when to sell their products. Lack of information also limits their influence in their communities and their ability to participate in decision-making. On the other hand, if women gain access to information technologies, they will benefit from increased educational opportunities and channels for better networking.
The side event, organized jointly by the Gender and Development Service and the Extension, Education and Communication Service, had two objectives: to advise Member Countries on the importance of gender sensitivity (the contribution men and women make, and could make) in the planning and implementation of ICT policy and projects; and to inform about FAO´s policies in promoting gender - disaggregated data and information and more particularly approaches to training agricultural statisticians, planners and analysts in methods for producing and using gender - disaggregated data for agriculture and rural development decision-making.
