FAO's achievements in support of rural disabled persons: Contribution to ESCAP Regional Review paper on the Evaluation of Achievements of the Asia and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons (1993 - 2002)

A publication of the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific

The FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific publishes a contribution to the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP): "FAO's achievements in support of rural disabled persons: Contribution to ESCAP Regional Review paper on the Evaluation of Achievements of the Asia and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons (1993 - 2002)".

Persons with disabilities in rural areas are representing the poorest of the poor, lacking access to most basic social services, including education and health services and access to production resources and opportunities for income generation, and employment. They are often excluded from active participation within their communites. Recognizing these constraints for improving the livelihoods of the rural poor, FAO has a strong commitment to ensure the full participation of the rural disabled in its food security and poverty alleviation programmes and activities to promote agriculture, livestock, fisheries and other non-farm based income and employment opportunities.
