The Director-General's speech at the launching of the new FAO/UNESCO Flagship Programme on 'Education for Rural People' was delivered at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) on 3 September 2002 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The speech addresses education for rural people as a crucial challenge for Sustainable Development. After reviewing the main constraints faced by rural people in satisfying their basic educational needs - an essential human right - FAO's Director General points out the next steps to be addressed as a follow up to the World Summit on Sustainable Development to place education of rural people at the core of National Plans of Action on Education for All.
