Gender workshops in the Asia and Pacific region (June 2002- March 2003)

These gender workshops were organized by the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific

SD-Dimensions is pleased to include information about three gender workshops organized by the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. The workshops, held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Kathmandu, Nepal, and Coimbatore, India addressed various gender issues, including gender mainstreaming, gender policies and distance education for women.

The Workshop on Gender Mainstreaming Within and Between Institutions was held 12-14 June 2002 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The workshop deliberations focused on approaches for cultivating inter-agency interaction for the integration of gender considerations and the advancement of rural women.

The resource paper "Policy and institutional framework for promoting the role of women in rural development in the Asia and Pacific Region" was presented at the Seminar on the role of women in sustainable rural development held 3-7 March 2003 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The paper stresses the need for the policy and institutional environment to be supportive of women and to recognise the significance of their contributions while assisting in their empowerment by cultivating their own skills and capacities.

The "Report on key informant workshop" was issued following the Workshop on gender and women in development studies in distance education programmes in South India which was held 29-31 October 2002 in Coimbatore, India. The workshop highlighted the core issues concerning distance education and examined the potential of distance education to bridge the current gender and rural/urban divides in education.
