International Workshop 'Rural Women and Land'

25-27 February 2003
Thies, Senegal

The "International Workshop 'Rural Women and Land'" took place in Thies, Senegal from 25-27 February 2003. It was organised by the Rural Women National Network of Senegal with the support of the Dimitra project and Enda-Pronat. The main goal was for rural women to speak out and highlight the problems they encounter in regard to accessing cultivable land, natural resources and land acquisition.

The workshop had approximately 100 participants, 70 of whom - were rural women, and men, from the different regions of the country. Among the participants were representatives of civil society of Senegal and from other African countries, representatives from aid and donor organisations, representatives from technical Ministries or decentralised State services.

The strong dynamic of the Workshop produced Recommendations and an Action Plan with a focus on practical activities. The overriding priority is to empower women, and men, living in rural areas through improved access to information. Rural women and their organisations can break through their isolation with the help of awareness-raising campaigns and training.

The participatory and decentralised methodology used to organise the Workshop will be replicated in neighbouring countries to highlight the needs as expressed by the grassroots organisations. A meeting has been scheduled for three years time to measure the progress of the Action Plan.
