Download GIS versions of World Food Summit maps

There are 19 maps in the World Food Summit Atlas. However, there are just two GIS versions of the maps because, in GIS format, a map can contain many attributes. In fact, 18 of the maps are represented by only one map containing all 18 attributes (the exception is the Global human induced soil degradation (GLASOD) map, which was produced by UNEP and ISRIC.( For information and downloading the GLASOD map, please go to the ISRIC GLASOD page. )

The original scale of the 18 maps is 1:25,000,000. They are available here for downloading in two map projections:

  1. FLAT_POLAR_QUARTIC projection, which is an equal area projection. (approximately)
  2.  GEOGRAPHIC projection, where the coordinates are expressed in degree decimals.
All the maps (except GLASOD) can be downloaded in three formats: The names of the maps, depending on their projection/format, are listed below. You can download each map by clicking on the file name: All the maps were finalized by  November 1996.  Therefore, the statistical data they are based on are pre 1996. For information on the contents of the maps please see the WFS Technical Documentation. For questions regarding the GIS aspects of the maps, please contact GIS-Manager@fao.org.

In Arc/Info GIS maps, the attributes of maps are contained in a file called the "polygon attribute table" (PAT) file. All the WFS maps have the same PAT file ( that is one map contains all the data). There are usually two sets of attribute values per map:
1. The absolute value of the attribute,
2. The categorized or rather class value of the attribute.

The latter always start with C_, e.g for "FOREST" absolute value, the corresponding class value is "C_FOREST".  Different maps were obtained by plotting different attributes. Generally the class values are plotted only. However, the absolute values can be displayed or used in a GIS process using the map in GIS format.  In the table below,  the map numbers are indicated if a given attribute is plotted. The PAT file contains the  the following items:

 Item Name
Map No.
