The main objective of the IP is to:

"promote and support interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral collaboration for improved planning and delivery of rural and agricultural development services"

Its expected outcome is two-fold:

• enhanced understanding within FAO and partner countries of cross-cutting issues and appreciation for added-value of more integrated and collaborative modes for sustainable development;
• several activities, defined at country level, that show the importance of working in a more integrated and collaborative mode for sustainable development.

• interdisciplinarity to address the multi-sectoral issues that underlie poverty and food security;
• partnerships within FAO and with governments, other organisations and civil society;
• continuous learning process;
• demand-driven.

• include key stakeholders in the development process;
• address the socio-economic and technical constraints that each country faces in carrying out their development plans
• promote cross-sectoral and integrated methods for promoting development;
• to bring together relevant expertise, not only within FAO, but also across the spectrum of relevant and interested specialised agencies and development organizations.
