December 2004 Announcement of a new publication Land reform, land settlement and cooperatives 2004/1
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 1995-2004 as the International Decade of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. The main objective of the Decade has been to strengthen international cooperation for the solution of problems faced by indigenous peoples in such areas as human rights, the environment, development, education and health. One of the most important outcomes of the UN activities undertaken during this Decade is the establishment, in 2002, of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII). As a contribution to the particular interests of indigenous peoples, this issue of Land reform, land settlement and cooperatives addresses the main issues that are at the core of the recognition of indigenous peoples’ land rights. Articles in this issue address indigenous land tenure in Asia, Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, case studies from Ecuador, Peru and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic are presented. Click here to view the document (html format) or in pdf format.
