This new, completely revised and enlarged second edition of the French version of the Multilingual Thesaurus on Land Tenure updates the version first published in 1999. This publication was useful as something of a "test case", and it benefitted from the criticism of users trying to get information about land tenure as well as the advice of experts in the area of tenure. The strong points of the Thesaurus, as well as its lacunae, thus became clear to the publishing team and to numerous specialists in land tenure. This is why we have decided to publish a second revised edition in French. “Land tenure”, as a discipline, is in constant evolution, and in the five years since the book was first published many changes have occurred in both the conceptual bases and in the methologies covered by the book. More than forty new terms have been added, as either primary or as secondary terms. Approximately the same number of terms have been completed, with examples. References to Internet sites or to other sources of information have also been included.

Finally, with the recent publication of the Spanish (2003), English (2003) and very soon the Chinese (2005) versions, there is now a collection of useful adaptations to the geographico-cultural differences inherent in the four languages. This second French version was improved from the experience acquired in the preparation of the other language versions. It is hoped that using a straightfoward alphabetical order – rather than the somewhat arbitrary classification of the first edition – will render this second edition more user-friendly.

This thesaurus is intended to offer readers a dictionary of land terms. However, it is more than a simple dictionary which provides literal translations and succinct definitions. For each term, the authors have attempted to introduce new elements for better understanding of the terms, demonstrating different uses in specific contexts and illustrating the use of the terms with concrete examples.
