Rural radio transmissions and rural youth in Cameroon

Communication for development case study 28

The following study is the result of years of close collaboration between the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) , the Food and Agriculture Organization of the united Nations (FAO) and the Ministry for Agriculture and Rural Development of Cameroon. This study evaluates the content and impact of a series of radio programmes produced and transmitted on various radio stations in five provinces targeted by the programme on population and development.

The conclusions of this study confirm the strategic importance radio plays in communication for development campaigns and strategies in Africa.

The radio transmissions touched upon various themes related to reproductive health and were designed to assist in changing certain behaviours of rural youth regarding issues of maternal and child health, prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseased, equity, gender issues, etc. This study also allows for a better understanding of the information needs of rural youth surrounding issues such as reproductive health, and identifies channels, programmes and programme listening times best adapted to youth audiences.
