The ongoing rural radio project “La Onda Rural” is an initiative for all Latin American countries. The project is jointly promoted by FAO, the Latin American Association of Radio Education (ALER) and the World Association of Community Radios (AMARC-ALC). From their experience, they value the contribution of the communication as an impeller of rural development processes, and they use the radio as the main technological tool to promote social change and attitudes.
It is for that reason that they decided to built a regional platform with the aim of reinforcing the impact of communication to attain a sustainable rural development.
Its primary target is to promote rural development, benefiting indigenous, afro and small farmer communities in Latin America, generating processes of dialogue and elaboration of common strategies.
The main objectives of “La Onda Rural” are to promote the participation of the rural populations in their own development and to use radio as a basic tool for social change and an agent of intermediation among rural populations.
The main lines of action are investigation, systematization of experiences and debate; study and elaboration of public policies proposals; promotion of capacity building; and development of institutions to promote articulation between rural populations.
In order to obtain all these objectives, it is important to promote the dialogue between governmental agencies and sectors of the civil society, to influence the formulation of public policies and development programmes. The direct beneficiaries of “La Onda Rural” are radios, ONG, social organizations, and public and private entities, giving special attention to rural populations.
The aim of all this effort is to improve the living conditions of rural populations in Latin America, widening their opportunities of participation in the processes of economic and social development, while at the same time respecting the environment and cultural diversity.
