November 2004 APEX: An extension strategy for educating farmers in population and environment issues within the context of farmingFact sheetThe global advocacy for sustainable rural and agricultural development demands from agricultural extension workers that they educate farmers in population and environment issues, presenting them in a context that is easily understood by the farmers. The APEX (agriculture, population, environment extension) strategy was developed over a period of many years in Egypt under a Government of Egypt/UNFPA/FAO project, and has proved to be very effective for this purpose. The strategy is recommended for developing countries that are confronted with problems of rapid population growth and environment pollution in rural areas. This normative approach may also be used for integrating other subjects such as HIV/AIDS education into ongoing agricultural extension programmes.
