Top priority should be given to improving = access to=20 quality education in rural areas for communities of farmers, = fisherfolk, and livestock producers as well as people living = in=20 mountains, forests and deserts, as a key factor in the = battle=20 against hunger, the United Nations Food and Agriculture = Organization=20 (FAO) said today.

"Failure to educate children in = rural areas=20 perpetuates needless hunger. Attending primary education is = one of=20 the surest ways out of the cycle of poverty and hunger for = children=20 and their families," FAO's top envoy at the Fifth High Level = Group=20 Meeting on Education for All (EFA) in Beijing, He Changchui, = said.

Growing inequalities exist among urban and = rural=20 regions with about 75 per cent of the world's poor living in = rural=20 areas. Giving the multifaceted character of poverty and food = insecurity, the =91agriculture-only' model of rural = development has=20 proven inadequate, according to FAO.

Research = indicates that=20 education contributes significantly to reducing malnutrition = while=20 playing an important role in increasing productivity. Sudden = improvements can be made which enable accelerated progress = in=20 primary school attendance when countries make education free = of=20 school fees and other charges.

"Children attending = schools=20 offering free meals are 30 per cent more likely to complete = primary=20 education," Mr. He said.

Basic education immediately = and=20 positively affects the productivity of subsistence and = smallholder=20 farmers, FAO stressed. The provision of more and better = basic=20 educational services such as primary education, literacy and = basic=20 skills training in rural areas can substantially improve=20 productivity and livelihoods.

The three-day Beijing = high=20 level group meeting is addressing Education for Rural People = (ERP)=20 as a core policy issue. Education is a key economic, social = and=20 cultural asset for individuals and their nations, with each = year of=20 additional primary schooling representing an important asset = for=20 higher income in later life.

"The challenge is to = work for=20 sustainable development in rural areas that favours the poor = and=20 provides more resources for health, education and gender = equality=20 and a sustainable environment worldwide," Lavinia Gasperini, = senior=20 officer for agricultural extension at FAO's headquarters in = Rome,=20 said.
