Update: Education

On 12 -15 June, in Rome, the "Meeting of the International Working Group on Education" addressed two major topics: Education for Rural People and Capacity Building. The meeting was organized by the UNESCO Institute of Education and hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Sustainable Development Department, flagship partnership on Education for Rural People. The weaknesses of basic education services in rural areas are related, among other factors, to the fact that many countries still lack capacities to formulate policies that respond to people’s needs. The meeting thus analyzed the consequences of taking into consideration the specific needs of the rural population at primary level, in non formal education, in technical an vocational education, and at higher education. Capacity building was the second theme discussed since it is the key to the preparation of good education plans, programmes and reforms. The Group also examined current trends in development cooperation, including Sector Wide Approaches, Poverty Reduction Strategies and follow up of Education for All and the MDGs, including the Fast Track Initiative.

Update: Communication for development

A Sub-regional workshop on "Communication, Natural Resources Management and Local Development" was held 6-8 June 2006 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The workshop, organized by FAO, the World Bank and GTZ, was coordinated by the Network on Communication and Natural Resources Management and the Communication for Development Group of FAO. The workshop gathered relevant experts and specialists in the field of Communication for NRM, with the objective of evaluating current tendencies and approaches of Communication for NRM in the region. The results of this consultative process will lead to a strengthening of communities and the establishement of priorities and proposals that will be presented in a specific session of the WCCD with the objective of sharing experiences and fostering cooperation for mainstreaming Communication for Development in the region.
