UN Goes Online in = Effort to=20 Educate Rural People (04/26/05 10:00)
 

OMAHA (DTN) -- Efforts to achieve the Millennium = Development Goal=20 of slashing world hunger and poverty in half by 2015 = received a new=20 boost today from an online educational tool kit targeting = rural=20 people, launched by the United Nations Food and Agriculture=20 Organization (FAO).

For the first time, a wide range of teaching and learning = tools=20 for the education of rural people is available on the = Internet,=20 providing governments, international and non-governmental=20 organizations (NGOs), rural school teachers, extension = agents and=20 the public at large with the latest knowledge on how to help = rural=20 communities better their livelihoods.

"The tool kit will help policy-makers to implement = education=20 programmes and improve the quality level of education in = rural=20 areas," said Lavinia Gasperini, an FAO expert who works in = close=20 collaboration with the UN Educational, Scientific and = Cultural=20 Organization (UNESCO) and other organizations on the = Education for=20 Rural People initiative, launched at the World Summit on = Sustainable=20 Development in 2002 in Johannesburg.

"You cannot promote agriculture if you fail to educate = rural=20 people. The first Millennium Development Goal -- reducing = hunger and=20 poverty -- will not be achieved unless we give a higher = priority to=20 improving education in rural areas, where the majority of = the people=20 live," she added.

Hunger, malnutrition and food insecurity reduce school = attendance=20 and erode cognitive abilities. Conversely, illiteracy and = lack of=20 education reduce earning capacity and contribute to hunger = and=20 poverty. Education plays a fundamental role in improving the = food=20 security, incomes and productivity of rural people. It also = helps to=20 promote new technologies, as literate people are more = inclined to=20 adopt these technologies and to protect their environment. =

The tool kit is a valuable resource for all those whose = daily=20 work consists of training the rural poor in food and = nutrition,=20 local knowledge systems, agrobiodiversity, food quality and = safety,=20 rural finance, marketing, forestry, fisheries, communication = and=20 other related issues.

According to latest estimates, "in the so-called global = village,=20 about 130 million children, the majority of whom are rural, = do not=20 have a pencil or a pen, nor a book, nor a teacher, and do = not go to=20 school," Ms Gasperini said. These children will become = illiterate=20 adults who will join the 880 million illiterates in the = world, the=20 majority of whom are rural adults.

"I want to bring back a self-sufficient eco-system so I can go year = around pasture with the buffalo and cut out their supplements," says = Wayne Copp. Consistent weed control and patch burning may be the keys to = realizing his dream.

Copp began raising buffalo on his Auburn, Kan., ranch in 1984. By = 1988 he had sold all of his beef cows and has not had a beef cow back on = the place since then. "The buffalo calves would chase the beef cows = around for two hours at a time," he says. "They were just playing, but I = thought they would kill the cows." When he purchased 320 acres of = native grass that adjoined his property he began working to restore the = proper balance of forage and animals.

Soyb= ean disease, lower prices lead farmers to switch crops
= WASHINGTON (AP)--U.S. farmers are afraid of a rapidly spreading soybean = disease and are anticipating lower prices, so they are planting fewer = soybeans despite a drought that has wreaked havoc on crops in Brazil, = the Americans' biggest competitor. Growers are holding their breath to = see what happens with Asian soybean rust. The fungus rust spreads on = soybean leaves in rusty-colored blotches, weakening the plant and = drastically reducing yields.
Some= rain received, but may not be enough
Soybean seedbeds were = 47 percent prepared, while 67 percent of the cotton seedbeds had been = prepared. Pasture and range conditions were rated mostly good to fair = as wind and lack of rains continued to deplete soil moisture and slow = pasture growth. The Southwest district reported 35 percent of all range = and pasture was in poor condition while the East Central and Southeast = districts reported none of the range and pasture as = poor.
Some= question federal estimate of smaller soybean crop
In a = report issued in late March, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said the = highest declines in soybean plants would come in South Dakota and North = Dakota. "I don't actually think USDA has their pulse on South Dakota = soybean production quite honestly," said Craig Haugaard, a producer = marketing specialist for South Dakota Wheat Growers. Haugaard thinks = the threat of soybean rust could help farmers in South Dakota and North = Dakota.
Soil= moisture levels improve with rain
Topsoil moisture levels = increased from 57 percent adequate to surplus, to a rating of 76 percent = adequate to surplus. Spring wheat seeding is rated at 69 percent = complete, with 16 percent emerged. Stock water supplies improved to 57 = percent adequate to surplus, well above last year's level of 43 percent = adequate with no surplus.
