"Introducing the International Bioenergy Platform (IBEP)" The International Bioenergy Platform is being presented to the international community in the energy, agriculture and environment sectors as a mechanism for organizing and facilitating a multidisciplinary and global approach.

"An inventory and comparison of globally consistent geospatial databases and libraries. Environment and Natural Resources Working Paper Series Number 19 " This report presents an inventory of global data sources which can be used to provide consistent geospatial baselines for core framework data layers in the support of generalized base mapping, emergency preparedness and response, food security and poverty mapping.

"Access to rural land and land administration after violent conflicts. FAO Land Tenure Studies 8" Secure access to land is a crucial factor in the eradication of hunger and poverty. Providing secure access to land is frequently not easy, and it is particularly complex in situations following violent conflicts.

Four new distance learning CD-roms have been produced by the Rural Institutions and Participation Service. Each CD-rom is comprised of modules, exercise and supplementary material. The following CD-roms are available: "Understanding and Supporting Rural Producer Organizations", "Understand, Analyze and Manage a Decentralization Process", "Participatory Negotiated Territorial Development", and “Participatory Project Formulation”.

"Computerizing agricultural cooperatives" previously published in English, is now also available in French and Spanish.

People: Gender and development

"Energy and gender issues in rural sustainable development" This paper discusses some gender issues and energy linkages within the international sustainable development context and presents recommendations on ways of incorporating gender sensitivity into energy and development policies and planning processes.

"Gender: The missing component of the response to climate change" This report analyses the gender dimension of climate change and the policies enacted to mitigate and adapt to its impacts with the aim of developing gender sensitive approaches with regards to mitigation measures, adaptation projects and national regimes.

"Guidelines for participatory village planning for the National Programme for Food Security and Poverty Reduction. Cambodia 2005" These guidelines are for the use of Village Planning Workshop Facilitation Team members working with the National Programme for Food Security and Poverty (FSPR) in Cambodia.

"Interview on the outcomes of the International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (ICARRD)" In an interview, Parviz Koohafkan, Director of FAO’s Rural Development Division and Executive Secretary of the International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (ICARRD) shares the main outcomes of the Conference held in Porto Alegre in March 2006 and provides his views about its follow-up.

Update: Energy and Technology

"FAO sees major shift to bioenergy. Pressure building for switch to biofuels" This press relase notes that soaring oil prices and growing environmental constraints has led to gathering momentum for a major international switch from fossil fuels to renewable bioenergy. “The gradual move away from oil has begun. Over the next 15 to 20 years we may see biofuels providing a full 25 percent of the world’s energy needs,” Alexander Müller, the new Assistant Director-General for the Sustainable Development Department of FAO.

A new version of the "GeoNetwork Site" has been launched. GeoNetwork provides agricultural information to decision-makers, allowing them to access satellite imagery, interactive maps and spatial databases from FAO, WFP, CGIAR and other organizations. Click here to see related press release.

Knowledge: Education

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, along with the Italian Development Cooperation and the Government of Saint Lucia organized the "Caribbean Conference on Education for Rural People: Food Security, Agricultural Competitiveness and Sustainable Livelihoods" on 18 and 19 May 2006 at the Rex Royal at Rodney Bay, Saint Lucia. The meeting was officially opened by Mr. Martin Satney Permanent Secretary Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of St. Lucia. The overall objective of the Conference was to bring together senior officials from ministries of agriculture and education in the Caribbean, along with representatives from non-government organizations, the private sector, universities, international aid and development agencies, to discuss how to foster education and training for people living in rural communities to increase employment and enhance livelihoods in the Caribbean and come up with recommendations for specific action to be carried out by interested stakeholders.
