Update: Land tenure"Interview on the outcomes of the International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (ICARRD)" In an interview, Parviz Koohafkan, Director of FAO’s Rural Development Division and Executive Secretary of the International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (ICARRD) shares the main outcomes of the Conference held in Porto Alegre in March 2006 and provides his views about its follow-up. Pressure building for switch to biofuels" This press relase notes that soaring oil prices and growing environmental constraints has led to gathering momentum for a major international switch from fossil fuels to renewable bioenergy. “The gradual move away from oil has begun. Over the next 15 to 20 years we may see biofuels providing a full 25 percent of the world’s energy needs,” Alexander Müller, the new Assistant Director-General for the Sustainable Development Department of FAO. GeoNetwork provides agricultural information to decision-makers, allowing them to access satellite imagery, interactive maps and spatial databases from FAO, WFP, CGIAR and other organizations. Knowledge: EducationThe Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, along with the Italian Development Cooperation and the Government of Saint Lucia organized the "Caribbean Conference on Education for Rural People: Food Security, Agricultural Competitiveness and Sustainable Livelihoods" on 18 and 19 May 2006 at the Rex Royal at Rodney Bay, Saint Lucia. The meeting was officially opened by Mr. Martin Satney Permanent Secretary Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of St. Lucia. The overall objective of the Conference was to bring together senior officials from ministries of agriculture and education in the Caribbean, along with representatives from non-government organizations, the private sector, universities, international aid and development agencies, to discuss how to foster education and training for people living in rural communities to increase employment and enhance livelihoods in the Caribbean and come up with recommendations for specific action to be carried out by interested stakeholders.
