This paper presented at the Global Junior Challenge (GJC) on December 2000 in Rome outlines the parameters of the digital divide, addresses the relation among education and such divide, as well as the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in education in "developing countries", and describes some FAO activities aiming at bridging this divide and making education for agriculture and rural development available on a more equitable basis. The "digital divide" refers to inequitable access to ICTs both between wealthy and poor countries, and, within all countries, between relatively privileged and underprivileged social groups. The digital divide threatens to further marginalise vulnerable and underprivileged groups, including the rural poor, a specific target of FAO mandate. |

| This paper was presented at the "FAO/UNESCO seminar: Education for rural development in Asia: Experiences and policy lessons", 5-7 November 2002, Bangkok, Thailand.
More than 70 percent of the world's poor are to be found in rural areas where hunger, illiteracy and low school achievement are common. This paper recognizes that education is an essential part of any strategy aimed at achieving sustainable rural development that encompasses all those who live in rural areas. Such strategies need to address the provision of education for all target groups: children, youth and adults, giving priorities to gender imbalances. This paper proposes strategies, policies and practices that have to be implemented by governmental and non-governmental agencies to alleviate both poverty at large and poverty in rural areas in the Asian region. |

| This book is a training tool for capacity development initiatives aimed at educators on rural development, and planners. It is also a useful tool for university professors, students and researchers of the agriculture rural development and education sectors. The theoretical foundation of this research is that being educated improves rural people’s capacity to diversify assets and activities, increase productivity and income, foster resilience and competitiveness, access information on health and sanitation, strengthen social cohesion and participation: these are all essential elements to ensure food security in the long run. The main findings of this research is the high association between food insecurity and primary education and the econometric model shows that primary education is a crucial element to reduce food insecurity in rural areas, even when compared to other factors such as access to water, health and sanitation. |

| This report is a training tool for capacity development initiatives aimed at educators on rural development, and planners. It is also a useful tool for university professors, students and researchers of the agriculture rural development and education sectors. This report presents the findings of an analysis on basic Education for rural people (ERP) in Croatia and proposes measures to improve access and quality of ERP in order to better contribute to rural development. The report notes that the major problems in basic education are connected to educational quality (i.e. the absence of aspects of rural life in curricula and textbooks, teacher-centred teaching methods, the lack of in-service training available for rural teachers). There are also some problems of access, in particular, difficulties with school transport and access to specific activities before or after normal school-hours. In most cases, the main cause of these problems is weak institutional capacity.

It was a meeting of a group of bilateral and multilateral agencies with the aim to propose strategies to reduce the disadvantages which rural people, and especially the rural poor, chronically suffer. The participants recognised that, despite several decades of experience in educational programmes for rural people, there was still a need for a special and concerted effort to draw together into accessible forms the many insights that those experiences had generated. It is also a useful tool for university professors, students and researchers of the agriculture rural development and education sectors. This paper was presented at the workshop held at FAO in Rome in 2002.
It underlines that knowledge is a powerful means of liberating children, and their families, from the cycle of poverty and hunger. For children living in remote rural areas, from Angola to Zambia and Bangladesh to Brazil, attending school competes with a whole host of demands on their time and energy - collecting water, herding animals and looking after their younger brothers and sisters. Rural people need more schools, with improved teaching methods, techniques and materials, focusing on their real needs.

The initiative seeks to address rural-urban disparities, which are a serious concern to governments and the international community as a whole. About 70 per cent of the poor live in rural areas. Despite the fact that education is a basic right in itself and an essential prerequisite for reducing poverty, improving the living conditions of rural people and building a food-secure world, children's access to education in rural areas is still much lower than in urban areas, adult illiteracy is much higher and quality of education is poorer.

the development projects in Malawi carried on by various UN agencies and NGO’s.
Despite a decade of free primary education in Malawi, the number of girls dropping out of school continues to outstrip that of boys, according to a new report from the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF). This article, stemming from a direct experience in the field, between June and September 2004 in some Malawian Rural Schools, provides unbiased overviews and opinions of a UNICEF volunteer on the Education problems affecting Rural Adolescent Girls, together with some suggestions on appropriate strategies to solve them. The mission was developed in the Chikwawa District, in the Southern part of Malawi, near Zomba. The reader will find inside a lot of updated information on the educational situation in Malawi. All these data are based on oral interviews in the field.

It seeks to help those engaged in agricultural education and training to identify the stakeholders for their own programmes. It explores the reasons and methods for involving these stakeholders in the development of curricula at three different levels: determining the aims and goals of the program and courses; setting the learning objectives (in terms of knowledge, skills and attitudes, the so-called "KSA approach" to curriculum development); and designing the learning activities by which these objectives are to be achieved. The manual also outlines the implications of involving outsiders in curriculum development processes.

| This paper is a training tool for capacity development initiatives aimed at educators on rural development, and planners. It is also a useful tool for university professors, students and researchers of the agriculture rural development and education sectors. This paper was presented at the "Aid Agencies Workshop Education for Rural People: Targeting the Poor" (Rome, December 2002). The teaching of practical skills in basic education and school garden practices have been experimented for years in many parts of the world. With almost forty years of direct experience in these areas, the author provides a brief analysis of the different approaches, lessons learned and suggestions for improving upon the relevance of these activities. The first priority in educating rural people is to teach rural children, youth and adults the essential learning tools (such as literacy, oral expression, and arithmetic); school gardens should not overshadow such key objectives or create unrealistic expectations. |

| This paper is a training tool for teachers, educators on rural development. It is also a useful tool for university professors, students and researchers of the agriculture rural development and education sectors. This study was published in "Entwicklung und Laendlicher Raum" on july 2002. According to the author, "school gardening" has often been understood as manual work in the school garden, without educational or social aims. The author promotes a sustainable and more comprehensive approach to agriculture in school which combines educational, socio-political and economic objectives. She is concerned about the "pathology" of school gardening which some critics have called child-labour exploitation or punishment. This refers to situations in which pupils have no control over their crops and no tangible benefits, when proceeds are appropriated by teachers as an additional income, or used by schools for miscellaneous expenses. For these reasons, agricultural labour in schools has often been viewed unfavourably by parents and communities.
This article highlights the strengths and the constraints of agriculture in primary schools and provides sound insight on how to overcome the pathology of weak practices.

| Many studies in different low-income countries showed that mother’s schooling has a
significant positive impact on child nutrition. This study investigates the direct contribution that mother’s schooling provides to child food security. It analyses the life-skills (e.g. processing information concerning nutrition, health, and hygiene) and productive skills (professional abilities) that are the most relevant channels through which mother’s schooling indirectly contributes to ensure children food security.
This research focuses on rural households living in Mozambique.
The analysis has carried out using data from the Demographic and Health Surveys

| In developing countries the majority of people still live in rural areas. They are typically among the poorest people in the society. Any education system that does not take this into account will not answer to the main problem of poverty reduction. The agricultural output of many Countries is low and with low growth rates compared to other sectors in society. This was also the case in Norway a hundred years ago. The situation in the country gradually changed, and, as we know, Norway is no longer a poor country. There are of course many reasons for this change and history cannot be replicated. But this book draw some parallels from the situation in Norway at the beginning of the 19th century to the situation in African countries today that could be worth looking into, concerning rural education and the impact it had on poverty reduction and on the standards of living for the rural population.
