School gardens are cultivated areas around or near to schools, tended at least partly by students. Mainly they produce vegetables and fruits; activities may include small-scale animal husbandry and fishery, beekeeping, ornamental plants and shading, and small-scale staple food production. School gardens are run for a variety of reasons. Some that are gaining prominence in all parts of the world are the promotion of good diet, nutrition education, and the development of livelihood skills, together with the power to extend this learning beyond the school itself in a variety of ways. This educational focus can be an important long-term contributor to national health and food security. This paper is a useful tool for teachers in rural areas but also for planners, educators on rural development and managers of agricultural education.
