| This guide addresses children and teachers in Zambia. Among children in many countries chronic malnutrition is widespread. Although comprehensive data do not exist for the school-age population, the indications are that under nutrition and micronutrient deficiencies continue to impede the growth of children when they reach school, while also reducing their capacity and motivation to learn. Nutrition and health education, as part of an integrated approach to health promotion, can contribute to improving the health of school-age children and, in the long term, of the population as a whole. To complement existing initiatives under the School Health and Nutrition Programme in Zambia, FAO assisted the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Zambia to develop an up-to-date nutrition education curriculum. Educational materials for teachers and pupils on locally relevant aspects of nutrition, health and hygiene have been produced. The Pupil's Book and Teacher's Book for Grade 2 children are examples of the new books, which will be made available through the Zambian national education system. |
