This book is a training tool for capacity development initiatives aimed at educators on rural development, and planners. It is also a useful tool for university professors, students and researchers of the agriculture rural development and education sectors. This paper was presented at the Ministerial Seminar on Education for Rural People in Africa: Policy Lessons, Options and Priorities, 79 September 2005, Addis Ababa. This paper emphasizes the need for a strong specific focus on rural people and argues that education is the most effective way to empower the rural poor to get out of poverty and to ensure that the MDGs targets are met in sub-Saharan Africa. The paper provides empirical data on the human development situation and trends for rural people of the region.
