| This speech is a training tool for capacity development initiatives aimed at educators on rural development, and planners. It is also a useful tool for university professors, students and researchers of the agriculture rural development and education sectors. The FAO's Director-General's speech at the launching of the new FAO/UNESCO Flagship Programme on 'Education for Rural People' was delivered at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) on 3 September 2002 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The speech addresses education for rural people as a crucial challenge for Sustainable Development.
