| This paper is a training tool for capacity development initiatives aimed at educators on rural development, and planners. It is also a useful tool for university professors, students and researchers of the agriculture rural development and education sectors. This paper focus on challenges and progresses of the education in rural areas. It was presented at the Workshop on "Food Security and the World Food Summit", organized by FAO during the Global Consortium of Higher Education and Research for Agriculture and Food Systems in the 21st Century (San Francisco, July 14th 2001).
