This paper is a training tool for capacity development initiatives aimed at educators on rural development, and planners. It is also a useful tool for university professors, students and researchers of the agriculture rural development and education sectors. It focuses on education challenge which is critical for poverty reduction strategies and is unavoidable to reach the goals of Education for all by the year 2015. This is the challenge of educating large numbers of people in the rural space in order to achieve sustainable rural development. This paper was presented at the "International Working Group on Education" held in Lisbon, Portugal, 19-21 November 2001
