|English||This paper is a training tool for capacity development initiatives aimed at policy makers, planners and educators on rural development. It is also a useful tool for university professors, students and researchers of the agriculture rural development and education sectors. This paper was presented during the Ministerial Seminar on Education for Rural People in Africa: "Policy Lessons, Options and Priorities", 2005, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This paper provides an overview of the barriers to education experienced by rural people in Mozambique. In addition to a situational analysis outlining major rural and urban disparities in access to and quality of basic education, it maps the response of major stakeholders in the sector, identifying gaps as well as good strategies and practices.
