The GIAHS project

Project summary

The project aims to establish the basis for international recognition, conservation and adaptive management of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems and their associated landscapes, biodiversity, knowledge systems and cultures throughout the world.

The GIAHS project is a FAO initiative supported by GEF (Global Environment Facility) through UNDP (United Nations Development Program). FAO works in close collaboration with UNESCO, IFAD, IPGRI, UNU, the Government of Netherlands, and others.

During the preparatory phase of the project (2002-06) some 200 agricultural systems were identified, of which five have been established as pilot systems for the Full Scale Project implementation phase which is expected to start in 2007.
