Preparatory Process towards the Third International Conference on SIDS

The International Conference has been preceded by regional preparatory meetings in the Caribbean, AIMS region and the Pacific where FAO participated and contributed. These meetings were followed by an inter-regional preparatory meeting held in Bridgetown, Barbados in August 2013 that reflected the findings from the regional meetings and reaffirmed the special case status of SIDS that affects their abilities to achieve sustainable development and to build the sustained resilience of economies, communities and households.

The inter-regional meeting called for empowered, genuine and durable partnerships based upon mutual trust, equality, respect, accountability and transparency. In addition, the meeting called upon FAO to facilitate a special meeting on food and nutrition security in order to develop an action program to address food and nutrition challenges facing SIDS.
