How are agriculture and social protection programmes working together in Malawi?

Insights from three different Ministries (Social Welfare, Finance and Agriculture) on how agriculture and social protection are actually working together in Malawi to reduce poverty and malnutrition in Malawi.

Benson Laurent Kansinjiro (Malawi’s Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare), Harry Mwamlima (Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development) and Osmund Chapotoka (Ministry of Agriculture) were interviewed during the From Protection to Production (PtoP) Regional Workshop “Strengthening Coherence between Agriculture and Social Protection” in Cape Town, November 2014.

Workshop organized by FAO with support from UNICEF and in collaboration with the African Institute for Health and Development (AIHD), the Africa Platform for Social Protection (APSP), the African Union (AU), New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD), World Food Programme (WFP), and the World Bank. This workshop has received funding from the European Union through the “Improved Global Governance for Hunger Reduction Programme”.
