FAO kicks off International Year of Soils 2015
Dec 5th 2014 is the first official World Soil day to be celebrated since the United Nations General Assembly designated it so, last year. Healthy soils not only are the foundation for food, fuel, fibre and medical products, but also are essential to our ecosystems. The UN has declared 2015 the International Year of Soils.

Healthy soils: key to food security and nutrition
The United Nations has named 2015 the International Year of Soils. It says healthy soils are critical for global food production and provide a range of environmental services. But up to a third of all soils are degraded due to erosion, pollution and other processes caused by unsustainable land management. Moujahed Achouri is the Director of the Land and Water Division at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). He outlines some of the goals and challenges that lie ahead.
