Dec 5th 2014 is the first official World Soil day to be celebrated since the United Nations General Assembly designated it so, last year. Healthy soils not only are the foundation for food, fuel, fibre and medical products, but also are essential to our ecosystems. The UN has declared 2015 the International Year of Soils.

Soils are our most precious natural resource and they are often undervalued. We rely on soils for food and fibre production, but also to store and filter our water, to store carbon, to be a medium for plants to grow in so that we have oxygen to breathe.

Soil is connected to almost all aspects of our lives, yet we often take it for granted. To mark the International Day of Soil on December 5, we interviewed several project managers at the European Environment Agency (EEA) about this precious resource.

After two years of intensive work, the United Nations has declared 2015 the International Year of Soils.

On 5 December 2015, it is World Soil Day and Science in Action takes a look at the condition of soils across sub-Saharan Africa.

Special event on the occasion of the first World Soil Day (5 December) and the launch of the International Year of the Soils (General Assembly resolution 68/232) This event is co-organized by the Permanent Missions of Qatar and Thailand, and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Ahead of World Soil Day on 5th December, Farming First TV spoke to Ronald Vargas of the Global Soils Partnership at the Food and Agriculture Organization, about why the United Nations agency has declared an International Year of Soils in 2015.
