Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Organization (AREEO)
Mandate:
The Ministry of Jihad-e Agriculture is the government body by which state policy on the agricultural sector is enforced. Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Organization (ARREO) is an umbrella organization under the Ministry which is responsible for Research, Education and Extension issues of agricultural sector in Iran.
Main Activities
Conducting applied research and providing agricultural education and extension services in order to meet the needs agriculture sector and the departments of the Ministry.
Competencies
AREEO is the largest professional agricultural network in the field of research, education and extension in Middle East and the world of Islam. Macro-policies of AREEO are as follow:
1. Research projects: 6671 projects conducted under:
- 24 nationwide research institutions
- 33 provincial agricultural research and education centres
2. Training 216512 rural users (persons/days)
- TV programs, 185612 minutes
- Education centers in 224 locations
- Fairs, exhibitions, 888 events
- Service of rural extension, 23883 persons
- Women extension agents, 3509 persons
- Legal status, in particular with the Government:
The Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Organization established by the Act of Parliament on June 30, 1974. The establishment of the new organization was due to concentrate and develop research activities of Agriculture and Natural resources' Ministry and to coordinate such activities with the world's most modern research programs.
However, the Institutions such as Iranian Fisheries Science Research Institutes (1918), Iranian Plant Protection Research Institute (1923), Razi Vaccine and Serum Research Institute (1925), and Seed and Plant improvement institute (1930) had launched series of agricultural related research projects years earlier.
- Government arrangements:
Iran's government or the executive branch of the Islamic republic of Iran is run by the Council of Ministers selected by the president with legislative approval. The Ministry of Jihad Agriculture (MJA) is one of the members of this council. ARREO is one of its departments and administrative authority responsible for Research, Education and Extension issues of agricultural sector in Iran.
- Potential modalities: AREEO is ready to share agricultural research and educational knowledge through implementing joint venture researches and training courses between countries of the region which will remarkably enhance South-South Cooperation (SSC) for agricultural research and development.
- Potential activities: Potential activities can be divided into two main groups:
Firstly, establishing International Training Courses (ITC) for developing countries based on South-South Cooperation (SSC). ITC attempts to provide an educational platform for transferring agricultural knowledge, science and technologies among diverse group of developing countries. Participants will be trained to increase their knowledge in solving agricultural problems in their countries and effectively share their knowledge with one another. A calendar of ITC program has been developed consisting of 25 course titles and their target group, instructors, cooperating institutes in Iran (Annex A).
Secondly: Cooperation in developing joint venture research projects to share experiences and achievements in solving agricultural problems for the sake of knowledge empowerment for sustainable agricultural development in developing countries. AREEO proposed titles and the detail of some research projects which can be operate as joint venture research projects as well as AREEO’s previous plan and projects which have already implemented for developing countries are demonstrated in Annex B.
