FAO providing technical support to the fisheries sector in Sudan

Khartoum - The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) conducted the first stakeholder consultation workshop, 2 May, on Technical support to the Fisheries & Aquaculture Sector Review and Investment Plan Preparation at the Ministry of Animal Resources. The workshop is part of the work initiated by FAO after receiving a request for technical support to the fisheries sector from the Ministry of Animal Resources. The stakeholder consultation workshop was opened by the Minister of Animal Resources a long with the FAO Representative to Sudan. 

In his opening remarks, FAO Representative to Sudan, Babagana Ahmadu, underlined that the fisheries sector in Sudan has potential to improve food security and livelihoods of farmers in Sudan. “There is no reason that also Sudan like many other countries in the region, can strengthen its economy by developing fisheries industry. FAO has the expertise and will support the government in its efforts to develop this important sector”, he reiterated.

The technical experts from FAO regional office led the workshop which was highly appreciated by the stakeholders from the embassies, UN agencies, National and International Organizations and private sector.
