TCP/SUD/3401 - Surveillance and Diagnosis of Foot and Mouth Disease

TCP/SUD/3401 - Surveillance and Diagnosis of Foot and Mouth Disease

Through Surveillance of the Foot and Mouth Disease Programme, concrete basis for national vaccine production to cater for in-country needs and eventually export vaccine to neighbouring countries was laid. Improved surveillance and diagnostic capacities for FMD will eventually lead to establishing effective control measures against FMD. Control of FMD through restriction of animal movement and vaccination is believed to reduce FMD incidence. This in turn will result in improving meat and milk production in the country, and contribute to food security, reduce hunger and alleviate poverty (MDG-1). It is also foreseen that an effective control of the disease will improve the competitiveness of Sudanese animals and animal products in the international markets.
