At the UN Summit in September, member countries will agree on a new set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that will frame their agendas and policies for the next 15 years. 17 SDGs have been proposed, including eliminating poverty, ending hunger and promoting sustainable agriculture, to succeed the Millennium Development Goals. FAO’s Sustainable Food and Agriculture (SFA) approach will be supporting countries in achieving the new goals once they come into force in January 2016.
Intergovernmental negotiations on the content of the SDGs began in January 2015, and will continue until September. The fourth session is held this week, from 21-24 April, at UN Headquarters in New York and focuses on means of implementation and the global partnership for sustainable development. It serves as a joint session with the preparatory process for the third International Conference on Financing for development (FfD 3). This conference is dedicated to financing for SDGs and will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in July.
