19/05/2017

FAO supported the participation of several Small and Medium Agro-Entrepreneurs (SMAEs) managers in a 5-day training programme on Linking Farmers to Markets, organized by International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC). The training took place from 15 to 19 May in Accra, Ghana. Forty-six individuals of diverse backgrounds from 13 African countries, including Benin, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe participated in the training. Topics covered included the importance of different actors along a particular value chain, development and sustainability of agribusiness clusters, and links between farmers and agro-input and -output markets. Participants discussed at length experiences, opportunities and constraints of structured marketing systems such as warehouse management systems, commodity exchanges and sales contracts receipts. In addition, the participants visited the Mushroom Growers and Exporters Association of Ghana, where they observed the different phases of the value chain, including, production, processing and marketing, and the respective challenges. They also visited the Eden Tree Company, which supplies high-end fresh and cut vegetables and fruits to the Ghanaian market. FAO technical officers in charge of agro-industries and agribusiness/value chain development from the Regional Office for Africa were among the key speakers at this event, in which they presented the Inclusive Business Model (IBM) approach and conversed with the participants.
