National Workshop on Supporting the greening of small food enterprising in Rwanda

04/04/2017

The EU-funded African Roots and Tubers Project aims to improve the livelihoods of small producers engaged in the roots and tubers value chains in selected African ACP countries through the promotion of linkages to domestic and regional markets. In February 2017, the project organized a three-day workshop on ‘’Supporting the greening of small food enterprising in Rwanda’’ in Kigali, Rwanda. Small food processors are an important market outlet for producers of staple crops such as potatoes. Supporting these businesses to become more sustainable, both socially and environmentally, is an important driver for inclusive value chain development. However, small agricultural enterprises in developing countries struggle to adopt sustainability measures. The workshop brought together stakeholders involved in the potato value chain from the public and private sector. The objective was to sensitize players in the chain to the opportunity cost and innovation benefits from adopting firm-level sustainability plans, by demonstrating the business case for going green.
