FAO Rwanda organized trainings on gender-sensitive value chain development

30/06/2017

The FAO office in Rwanda delivered two training sessions under the FAO Multipartner Programme Support Mechanism (FMM) project on value chain development and women empowerment in the context of cross-border trade in Rwanda. In May 2017, a training on gender-sensitive value chain development was delivered by AgriProFocus in Musanze, Rwanda. The training aimed at strengthening the capacity of development practitioners (government districts, ministries, private sector and NGOs) to analyse value chains from a gender perspective, understand women’s roles and their contribution to the value chain, recognize gender-based constraints and develop practical strategies for addressing them. In June 2017, a training to the members of four cooperatives of women cross-border traders was held in Rusizi, border district of Rwanda. Through the training, cooperative members participated in exercises and discussions to reflect upon the challenges and constraints faced by women in business and cooperative management, decision-making at the cooperative and household level, and access to finance. Training participants also discussed how to address these challenges together with their male colleagues and husbands. The training was prepared and delivered in close cooperation with UN Women.
