Silvopastoral systems and mitigation of climate change in Latin America

Author(s) Montagnini, F., Ibrahim, M. & Murgueitio Restrepo, E.
Year of publication 2013
This article presents data showing how silvopastoral systems can mitigate their own emissions of greenhouse gases, and can even be carbon positive, thus helping to mitigate climate change, when properly designed and managed. The article describes different types of silvopastoral systems, with examples from Latin America, emphasizing the need to select and manage the right species of fodder, trees and cattle. The article contains tables with data on carbon sequestration and allometric equations used for calculating carbon sequestration at the plot and farm levels.
