First €50 mln of €100 mln Italy grant earmarked for global food security, anti-disease and investment promotion projects

A first installment of the Italian Government's €100 million grant to the FAO Trust Fund for Food Security has now been allocated to various projects around the world, according to the Policy Assistance Division (TCA) at FAO. Approximately €45 million has so far been earmarked for initiatives to increase food security, fight animal and plant diseases and increase advocacy activities aimed at boosting public and private investment in the agricultural and rural sectors.

Projects focus on six priority regions: sub-Saharan Africa, Caribbean nations including members of CARIFORM, Pacific Island countries, Countries in the Great Lakes region of Africa, Countries in Central Asia and selected countries such as Afghanistan and Palestine which are facing food security emergencies.

As part of the agreement between Italy and FAO, a special management unit will be set up at FAO as a focal point for fund activities to ensure that projects comply with Italy's overall development strategy.
