EX-ACT tool for value chains

Assessing climate mitigation, adaptation and resilience, and socio-economic improvements of food value chains

The growing greening trend in local, national and international economy generates an increasing demand to develop sustainable and performant food value chain in order to eradicate poverty in rural areas, to increase resilience of populations and ecosystems, and to de-carbonize our global economy. Today, food value chain count for 19-29% (Vermeulen et al, 2012) of GHG emissions in the world and  1/of the total food loss and waste, which represents a cost of 750 billion US$ (FAO, 2013).

Current agricultural systems, processing and transportation restrict sustainable development in the food sector. Changes have to be made and food value chain presents numerous challenges and opportunities to tackle simultaneously the multiples stakes faced by rural population, in order to break their observed under-performance.

In line with specificities of value chains and repeated request for application of EX-ACT on effective life cycle assessment of value chains to work out of carbon footprint (CFP), a new EX-ACT Value Chain Tool (EX-ACT VC) was designed in 2016. Mainly used for simple value chains in developing countries, EX-ACT VC is a multi-agent based tool appraising input supply, production, transport, processing and using numerous indicators. Being multi-impact designed, it gives performance on

(i) climate mitigation (GHG emissions, CFP, economic return of climate mitigation),

(ii) climate resilience

(iii) socio-economic performances (value added, income and employment generated)

(iv) other environment indicators (water use, energy use)

of food VC, either for the current situation of the chain, or for an upgrading project scenario.

EX-ACT VC covers crops, livestock, fisheries and aquaculture value chains at micro and meso level (by agent, by stage and for the whole value chain).
