The objective is to reduce methane emissions per unit of animal products, by increasing the productivity. In the developing world, many low-producing animals could be replaced with fewer but more productive animals, thus reducing total emissions while maintaining the supply of livestock products. This will require changing breeds or implementing cross-breeding schemes (IFPRI, 2009).
